It is with great sadness that the Board of the Riverview Community Association advises that Bill Durrell, a long-time Riverview resident and valued member of our Board passed away on March 27.
Bill was a firm believer in community building, which is what prompted his joining our organization. He was an active Board member, contributing in a significant way to all our discussions and activities. The most significant of these being his initiative to strengthen communications with our members. He felt that informing our members of activities that would affect or be of interest to them was an important element of the RCA’s mandate.
Developing a new website was the largest element of this initiative. Bill researched local Cochrane firms that offered web-building services, reviewed examples of their work, made recommendations to the Board, and then reviewed the final product. As you can appreciate, this took a considerable amount of time and effort on Bill’s part. He completed this work shortly before his health began to fail. Without Bill’s initiative and enthusiasm, the new RCA website would still only be a thought.
Bill was also an avid sports fan and enjoyed cars, all cars. You may have seen him driving through Riverview in his coral 2003 Thunderbird, with the top down and likely wearing his Rough Riders jersey. Conversation after our summer Board meetings somehow always seemed to migrate to the CFL, and the Riders in particular. As we moved into fall the focus of these after-meeting conversations shifted to the CFL western finals / Grey Cup, and of course, the Riders in particular. Bill was such a Rider fan that during the 2021 Stampeder – Rider Western Final game (the Riders won), Sherry Hufnagel managed to get Bill a Rider’s ball cap signed by the entire Saskatchewan team.
Bill’s humour and well-considered points of view will be remembered and very much missed at our Board meetings.
Our condolences go out to Bill’s family; his wife Jeanne and sons, Troy, Reed, and Steven.
